VRay LightSelect problem

Hi,

I tried Lightselect in full mode and have this problem:

First image is beauty, second image is Lightselect from dome light with hdr. Ceiling is lit only by hdr, But it looks really weird as you can see, like only primary bounce and no GI. So I cant make beauty image from all lights with lightselect. Am I missing something?

Thank you.

Perhaps it would be best if you could send us a test scene so we could do some investigation.

Scene sent to support.
Thank you.

A bit off topic, but I wonder… how are you lightening the edges of those ceiling supports? Edges Tex, Comp Tex, or textured that way? Looks good.

Textured with vraydirt. And thanks btw

I used standard vray domelight in half mode, not sphere dome, I unchecked it. But I am pretty sure it should work too.

In this particular case the issue was releted to the evnironment map, which was not lighting the scene enough form the “ground”.

Hi,

so if Dome light is problematic, what is the better way to use HDRI images for environment? Also in some cases it produce specs on diffuse and reflections.

Best,
Nikola

I would normally only use such half HDRI textures for exteriors, since you normally model some sort of ground surface, when doing interiors, I would use a vray dome light, but without an HDRI texture and create any exterior view using image planes or modelling it, depending on the project.. You could with this particular example, use a Vray Plane, with say a mid grey texture, and see it that bounces, enough light from the HDRI image, into the interior OR find a full 360 HDRI texture.

So.. after few more test it appears that when using Irradiance map, the GI solution is not included in the Light select render element. For now when working with LightSelect render elements it would be best to use Brute force for primary GI engine.

Thank you. I am glad we find out the problem through emails. I use BF most of the time but in this scene use IR after long time

Please, I have another problem with this scene. I put all lights to some lightselect render elements and with BF/LC setup its fine. Now I have a problem with materials with VRayLightMtl. Its some text glowing on kitchen oven and I have background with this material too reflecting on some things. But its not bright in all render elements, so when I put all lightselect together, its looks like beauty render except this glowing text and reflecting background. How can I solve this or any workaround please? Thank you.

Let me see if I understand this correctly… VrayLightMtl cannot be added nor will it appear in ANY VrayLightSelect element. You can of course make it act like a Vray Mesh light, by checking the direct illumination box, but you still won’t be able to add it to a VrayLIghtSelect element. You need to use VraySelfIllumination element, to catch VrayLightMtl

Oh, I forgot about this element, try that, thanks, it should work. But when LightMtl emiting direct light and illuminating the scene (not just bright the texture) I probably need to convert it to vraymesh, right?

Now I realize this element not working for me. I am using LightMtl on background object for outdoor environment and this object reflecting on whole kitchen. I use some image on this object and use LightMtl to bright it right for camera exposure to be nice from interior. And because this object is brighten, it reflecting very nice on objects. But its reflecting, not illumination. So I cant use selfillumination element. So how can I add this to lightselect element please?

Use Mulimatte to create a mask for that… or you could try the Crytopmatte element (no good if using Photoshop though), since Photoshop doesn’t handle it yet. Although, I think an even better solution would be to have an EXCLUDE function for the SelfIllumination element, but that doesn’t really help you right now

Another option will be to add (plus) all the light select render elements and subtract (difference) the result from the RGB. This way you will get an element will the missing light.

I dont think this is the right way how to do this. It doesnt solve the problem or second thing is far from ideal. I think VRayLightMaterial is a texture on object which is reflecting on other objekt like any other objects. There should be a simple way how to add this bright reflection as element. Please someone from chaosgroup, how can I solve this issue please?

Then you need to use mesh light instead. Also you can set its Affect diffuse to 0 if you don’t want it to emit light.

you can even a vray sphere, plane or disc light, set to invisible if you don’t want it in an element pass, and deselect diffuse and reflection to get specular highlights or deselect diffuse for both reflect and specular. Nice trick for getting great specular highlights on objects in a room, where the actual lighting is just not coming from the right angle, for a particular shot.. I use Dabarti Light Assistant and IPR for those “fake” parts of any lighting setup. It’s a cheat I know, but for me, as long as it looks good and the client is happy and pays up, how I achieve the look, just doesn’t matter.
