VRayLightMtl texture in viewport problem

Hello,
I saw some video on internet somewhere and he put a texture to opacity slot in VRayLightMtl, turn on show material in viewport and just view this texture in viewport on object with this VRayLightMtl. But if I try this, only what I can see is white. Am I missing something? I try to lower multiplier for that material, but it didnt help. So how can this be possible?

max 2013, Vray 2.3, win 7 x64, GeForce GTX 580

You need to use Nitrous and you need to select “Show realistic material in viewport” rather than just “Show material in viewport”

Cant turn on show realistic material in viewport in Slate material editor, bug or something. I have to switch to Compact material editor. Here I can turn it on, but without any help, object is still white. Iam using Nitrous.

When you are in Slate material editor go to:
Main 3ds Max menu \Views\ Show Materials in Viewport As > Realistic materials with maps.
(in Slate Material Editor: Toolbar will show now Shaded/Realistic Material in Viewport flyout.)

Also make sure you have “Enable transparency” On.

This works fine with Nitrous in our environment.

Yes, you are right, its work. But when you did it this way, all materials will be realistic in viewport. And in complex scenes, realistic materials can slow down viewport because max have to load it and its really slow sometime.
But thanks for this tip.

You should be able to make only the light material realistic.

Just hold on the button “Show shaded material in Viewport” and select “Show realistic..”. This could be done only for the V-Ray light material.

It is Max 2015 btw.

If you aren’t wanting to use show realistic material, just turn the Vray Light Material colour swatch to black and the texture will show fine
