The way they sell it is you'll basically have an infinite amount of resources in your web browser. I had a guy try to lease me three pretty weak virtual desktops for $800 a month.

I am planning to buy one of the 1080 ti and dip my toe into gpu rendering. So far when I've looked to buy they are all "out of stock". I'm going away for a couple of weeks and will check again when I get back.

i have just set up a new workstation with Win 10, core i7 6950, ASUS X99-DELUXE II MB, GeForce GTX 1060 (for UI), 64 G RAM.

I do not have the hardware expertise of many on this thread. I do not plan to OC. Can anyone recommend which one might be best for vray arch viz - Founders, Turbo or Rog ?

        Thanks!

i picked one up on the side of the street here in LA. Kid was selling it for $800 so I prolly spent too much. But I can now navigate and use dual 4k monitors. There was a noticeable lag with a 1080.

Don't know the diff between those versions, but the thing you want to consider is cooling the card. If with air, consider the fan...where is it getting it's air from, and how much space is before the fan.

GPU rendering maxes out the utilization on the card, so the temps will go up. I run a gpu temp gadget on my desktop for each card. The card that is in the case next to another card gets the hottest. 90 degrees C is what I heard the max you want to run at...in fact a good rule of thumb, is 85 or less hot but ok...100 is too hot, even 90 is too hot. My goal, 78 or less. Heat also effects the cards longevity.

You will see the clock speed go down on the card to keep it from overheating (thermal throttling) and thereby your 1080 ti investment goes down because it is not running as fast as it could.

So consider the type of fan(s) the card has, and where it will go...inside the case? Next to another card? Outside the case?

If water cooled, that's a different ballgame, which I have not played yet. Hope this helps.

thanks, that is helpful. the card will be inside the case. the case is fan, not water cooled. the 1060 card I have for the UI is in the lowest MB slot. I plan to put the 1080 ti in the top slot for max separation. Monitoring card temp as you describe sounds like a good idea and I will try to do that.

There is some discussion at the start of this tread that the various flavors, FE, Turbo , Rog may have different fans. The Turbo is said to maybe have 3 fans and founders 1 fan. But the photos in the links most recently posted to this thread appear to show that all the flavors have only 1 fan each. Still unsure of which would be best for my situation. I called ASUS to ask but that was a waste of time. got the wrong "tech" or "support person" I guess. They did not seem to have any idea or understanding of what I was asking about.

The founders edition has one fan blowing from the case out the back, the others have multi fans but may blow from and to the case, I think the multi fans maybe better for outside case if they are close together, but if you have a few inches between it may work well.

My 980 ti's have two fans, and blow from and to to case, the one sandwich gets up to 84 C, but I have render nodes with the cards outside now and they run 78 C tops and don't thermal throttle.

not sounding too good, 78 is high, i used to think it was normal like that until i took them out of the case, now 65 is tops and all on default, althought it is speced to run up to 90 i hate when they run hot

Hmmm. Looks like I need to keep working on my cooling design.

What kind of cards are you running, if you don't mind me asking. I wonder if the type of cards dictate how hot they will run.

1x zotac 1080 am edition, 2x 1070 palits and 1x 970, i have them out of the case with extenders that was the recommendation given to me by zotac and palit for rendering and also from the shop i buy all my parts, since then it seems to be working great just out of the box, nothing special needed, they are sitting on a make shift table and bolted down near the pc tower here is a shotClick image for larger version

Nice, you have more room than I do for airflow...I'll have to get more creative with my setup. I like the length you have for your VGA power cables...I'll have to find some of those.

BTW, I'm in the process of building a multi-gpu WS...Vlado mentioned in another post an rt benchmark tool, which I plan to use once up and running. I've been brainstorming on how to build the open air WS, and your picture helped with ideas.

those cables came with the corsair power supply, this is all under my desk also, even placed a small fan there for good measure in the end i never needed the fan

I redesigned things to get access to as much open air as possible...now im getting 72 degrees C Tops. I'll see if I can brainstorm anymore ideas.
