  • I guess I'm a late arrival to AMD. My past experiences with AMD have been not so good, they tended to overheat quite a bit. But, I believe that has been taken care of in the last few years. Pentiums have always been rock solid for me, but I'm giving AMD a shot with the X2 4400, I have a feeling I won't be dissapointed

Did I mention I'm typing this on a Blickensderfer 1900?

    • hahaha, to be honest im not really sure were people get this "AMD's keep overheating" idea.
My last AMD 2700+ never once overheated and my friend who used AMD from 1800+ upwards also never overheated.
I guess back in the very early 1500-1800 series they were hotter than your average CPU, but now days the Intels are generaly hotter from what i see, well the prescotts were.

Got it from the very hot idle & load temperatures I saw, and the programs that would just randomly close out to the desktop while performing a task (like rendering or calculating something) I believe I had a 2100 and a 2200? I honestly can't remember, it might have been lower than 1800.

I'm sure it was heat though, I put the coolest & fastest fan/sink combo on my cpu (at the time, was $45 I believe, and loud as a jet!) the problem was ok for a few weeks, but I couldn't stand the super loud fan. No kidding, it was super loud, could hear it very well in the other room with the door closed.

        • yeah actually i think your right the 2100 ro 2200 was rather warm, but not THAT warm i dont think.

Either way they are HEAPS better now. My 3000+ runs at around 30c and the CPU fan only runs at 1300rpm so almost silent.

          • back in the day, amd chips DID run hotter then Intels. You could use the fan that came with the intel chip, but generally you were better off to buy a aftermarket cpu fan for your amd. This kinda went away quite awhile though, and now the roles have reversed if I recall correctly.

Oh and nothing wrong with the 830s, but I prefer a more efficient processor.

Im writing this on my x2...

Daforce: if i knew it would have taken this long to get your processor and memory, Id have purchased the damn things for you and shipped em to ya...

Thats right, rub it in my face why dont ya... hahaha

Heck, that may still be the quickest option for me..

What I am going thru is nothing short of extraordinarily SHIT.

And now to add insult to injury im trying to track down a 680w Thermaltake PSU, apparently they are rare as hens teeth and there is only one in all the suppliers this side of Australia.

Mmmm I think i may just give up on this whole high end PC stuff, and buy myself a mac, get a Volvo and start writing novels.

(dont know where that last bit came from)

                  • Its kinda weird that there is such a short supply of cpu's you would think that they would have shipped enouhg by now. I can remember the launch date but I got mine on June 28... 2 months later you would think that there would be enough to go around also concidering that sales are actually lower than first anticipated.

BTW just got some Corsair TwinX 2gb cas2 ram and man is this stuff sweet

                      • Well just got off the phone with them. And they have basically confirmed that they will recieve the x2's this afternoon or tomorrow morning. They even have a consignment number for the shipment..good sign

As for the ram they were meant to send it out last week, but it never seemed to happen. They will send it with the cpu.

Looks like the 200post curse really did exist

Ahh well its not over till the phat computer sings

                            • well we wanted X2's but Dell dont supply them so intel it is. you could argue that other companies could offer the X2's for slightly more but we just cant get them here from the big companies... (Perth, australia)

I think going for the X2's is definatly ok for one PC or a home computer, but when you are ordering many on a leasing scheme you are limited a bit with the options unless you assemble them all yourself. Also looking at all benchmarks the 830's definatly are excellent for us if they even come close to matching the speed of a dual xeon 2.8.

each PC with 2Gb ram is only working out to be around AU $1750 and we dont have to assemble them or worry about breaking stuff ourselves. still seems like a good option to me anyway for price/performance
