2k would be fine with a dual core since they do not have HT( except for the extreme edition intel and like buck said 2+ opti dc's).
We have 10 830's running on our farm with XP64, so far they are very stable and are about equal to a dual Xeon 2.8.
Thanks for that. Answers all of our questions. Originally we were thinking of waiting incase the dual cores had any issues/bugs but with your good experiences so far it sounds like a safe move. We are probably going for 10-12 830's as well with 2gb ram (ive rarely needed more than 1gb so far)
XP pro should be fine right? There is a reg fix to remove the 10 connection limit for the manager machine so shouldnt need XP server afterall
as far as xeon 2x 2.8's vs. 830's we render a lot of frames and the 830's are right there with the 2.8's on most scenes even beating the 2.8's occasionally.
When buying several systems as opposed to a personal box one must also consider reliability, I know the AMD's are a lot better than they used to be but Intel still has an edge on my confidence rating.
hehe ok well the performance may not be poo as such, but im just not a big fan of the way they were produced. Seems a bit slapdash to me.
But either way, what it all really comes down to is price/performance. So i guess the 830's are not too bad.
AMD's have been great for ages... just accept it... you know you want to.
Intel's arnt so high on "my" confidence rating.
Did I mention im typing this from a Celeron 1.7ghz
