@ Dave and Beestee - nicely put.
None of the other off-topics in the off-topic section really offends anyone. Some up-tight people may feel those topics are completely unrelated. Simply don't read them then.
But why does this one topic evoke 'get out of hand'? Religion and politics are polarizing topics. Religion is core belief system many people have and it tells people how they should run their lives. The only reason it would 'get out of hand' is because some people are so up-tight about their beliefs and questioning that it instills a sense of doubt about their 'well-being' and 'future admission into the gates of heaven.' That's why people get offended. 'To doubt is to 'sin' in Catholic-speak.
The world is so religion-centric. I think it is very healthy to study other people's belief systems. Even if you don't believe in something, it's a worthwhile exercise to pick up a book on Buddhism, Taoism, etc. and see what values they try to instill as well. You'll be surprised that others have moral values as well. But many people won't study another religion because something in their teachings usually says no to. That's a dangerous thought-pattern.
As a side - it's funny - more than half the baseball players on the Red Sox are extremely religious. They bring up god in all their interviews and it sickens me. They think because they are good baseball players, that god has blessed their pitches and swings lol. Their god apparently likes to see the Sox take on the Mets.

interesting topic though - just hope it doesn't get out of hand
