    Mental Ray

Us architectural illustrators are doomed! No, not really. Mental Ray just reminds me of Accurender back in the day it worked inside of AutoCAD.

I have seen more times then not people buying software and it just sites on the shelf. My first office had Accurender for years until I showed up to open the box. My second office had VIZ for years until I showed up and opened the box. Here, my current gig, I have spent the past 3 years trying to implement Revit and today we are just using it to create 2D documents like we did in ADT. This industry is really slow to change so as long as we stay ahead of the curve we'll be fine.

I did hear that Google is wanting to buy Autodesk ( it was an April fools post ~ I fell for it)

Regarding Mental Ray. Well actually I am biased regarding rendering
But still I test as much renderes as possible. This is the way I came to Vray.
In the past I was a big Final Render Fan. I couldn´t believe there would be something
better or faster. Until Vray "punched" in my face.
With every new max version I give Mental Ray another chance.
I go through tutorials and test every new feature. But at the end I always
come to the same conclusion. Mental Ray is a very old Lady who get´s another
"plastic surgery" every new Max release. Below the line it still uses Photon Mapping
the worst possible GI Method. To get around this, they introduced Final Gathering
to "paint over" the Photon Mapping. Final Gathering alone is slow, Splotchy and inaccurate.
(Try an Indoor scene lit just by indirect light with FG). with max 2008 they introduced
Skylight portals wich "shows Final Gathering where to place samples" (original words
by the autodesk demo artist) to come around the lack of details (guide dog for MR ? ).
All I see are huge workarounds for features that are simply outdated.
          (Anyone remembers windows 95 ? )
I have never.. absolutely never come close to the rendertimes vray can offer.
Hey I do not say that I´m not willing to learn.. but so far noone could show me
how I get similar rendertimes like in Vray.
And seriously.. if someone needs "Pro Materials" to get a decent Material.. he better
looks for a new job as a gardener .. because there might (very likely) come a situation where the out of the box things do not work.
Just my personal biased two cents

          cheers
While vray is always getting new and exciting things, mr is tagging along, and trying to patch things up yes.
The reason for such thing is simple: while chaosgroup writes a render engine, its also upto them to intergrate it into the packedge. Its in their best interest to release a good solid render engine which works verywell with the program its mento to run under. Mental ray on the other hand has a different sotry. Mental images develops the renderer on its own, and its autodesk and others who used to intergrate it into their apps. And here is where the big difference comes to play.
Mental ray had those same options in its core engine, support for proxies, light portals etc..but it was not itergrated by the application developer until now, so in essence its not mental ray who should be put to blame.

I think you are thinking like a developer. To the end user who cares as long as it produces good images fast. I don't know... It might take a lot of work to get an ok image out of Mental Ray... I'll have to test it. I know it takes a lot of work to get an ok image out of v-ray. It takes skill to produce the kind of images I see posted here.

                Wow. ProMaterials are pretty neat.

But the quality of the video is laughable.

                  ProMaterials

ProMaterials are just like Accurender materials. I don't think it is anything new, just re-birthed.

I think like a guy who buy licenses... we are a small studio (6 licenses) 7 peoples working with max and vray...

Mental Ray cause so many trouble with maya, I even look at MR standalone for several project... Very heavy to manage... When I fall into Max I lloked at other renderers like brazil, FR or Vray and after good testing my choice : Vray.

Faster and easier to understand than MR...

                    Best regards...

I am pretty impressed by the pro material concept. Physically based materials, based on manufacturer supplied data and professional images. Simple, easy, real. The new lighting analysis tools also depend (according to the video, ONLY work with the pro mr mats) on these materials since they are "real" "physically based".

In the past I have tried to look up info on materials such as paint as far as real physical properties to try and use that when creating the material. All that work is already done for one now, all one has to do is select the different specs from a list. For archviz this is a big plus, imho. New or old, it simplifies the workflow for archviz a lot, which is what all architects want, this is why they love maxwell, because it's oh "so simple" (too simple for me, but...)

I guess it all depends who the target audience for all this stuff is. Games, archviz, movies, etc... where max is headed...

The videos are pretty bad quality, I have seen them all already, it wasn't easy

I think the new iterative stuff is real nice too, makes it a lot easier to preview changes. Hopefully VRay can use some of these new tools?

Well, lol, if very blurry GI, nothing else than camera movement, and an AO pass are "no bad", I wonder why we pixel-f**k VRay so much, for noise visible only @ 400% zoom and slight flickering here and there on very glossy surfaces.
When it renders in a fraction of the times above (62 cores, right, for 15 minutes per frame in Pal res? Thanks but no thanks).

Simone will pardon me, I hope, if I link here one of his VRay works (and some PS, I gather)

None of the "photos" or the "running shots" in the gallery are actually photographies.
Not sure about the Dubai shots, but I do have a gut feeling...
