I have been trying to get compact disc type of reflections on top of a sylinder, but havent had any luck yet...anybody else had any luck in this?
You might try using the anistropic feature with a fine bump map. I found it looks nice and it gives the surface a realistic bump feel to it. I might post some tests later

Btw I hope this is the last build that must be installed manually. Hopefully from the next build on we will have an automatic setup.

the glitch when targa with alpha is used on refraction slot but it doesn't work as a transparency
remember i sent you the file with two cross-hatch trees
one with standard and one with v-ray material
and alpha didn't work on v-ray material
you asked me for the file but you never answered afterwards
normally all you have to do to make tree like that is to use instanced maps on both diffuse and opacity channels and set the image alpha as a "mono channel output"
with v-ray material i had to un-instance them and for the image used on refraction set alpha as grey and invert the the image

something to keep in mind, is an easier way to install vray across lots of computers, we have 25 here, 1 single pluginpath, but vray still has to be installed in each max root folder.
would be nice to have everything in the plugin folder, then vray would only need to be installed once, instead of 25 times.
You dont need to copy all those vray files into the max root folder, we have the same setup here and we fixed it like this:
1. Make a "Local-Path" Folder on the server (probably the same server that have all the plugins)
2. Rightclick "My Computer", Properties, Advanced, Environmental Variables, In the "system variables" find "path" and add the complete path to the "Local-Path" folder for example: \\server\NetMax42\LocalPath\
Remeber to have the ";" inbetween the last existing path and your new one. Also you have to either reboot or log out / log in to initiate the changes.
This way a complete update of vray on all rendernodes is just to copy the plugins to the shared plugin folder and the max root files to the localpath folder.
