But is there no workaround possible, like a "Smoothed geometry reflection correction" checkbox in the VRay render dialog? The option could maybe force the reflection engine to check the polygon angles of the geometry and not be fooled by the smoothing groups?
Reflections solely based on the geometry, and not phong shading would make everything look flat shaded. You really have to model things with phong smoothing in mind for optimal results.

Thanks for the info Torgeir. Still I find it strange that Phong shading causes reflections on a flat polygonal area to be malformed.

      Cheers,

... I mean Phong smoothing of course. Where has the edit button gone?

              A little OT

Is it physically possible to assign a multires modifier to such a geometry? if not how in earth can a model so complex be optimiezed?

                Hello Vlado and Peter,

The new feature solves the problem with single objects having multi-millions of polygons. I'm just curious, will it be the same with large
                object counts/millions of polys?

The good news is that V-Ray won't really care the if there are many objects with little polygons or one object with many polygons or many objet with many polygons.

                  Zero,
Building and optimizing geometry of this magnitude is an extremely complex task, usually handled by dedicated software applications. At this point we do not plan to support the whole heirarchy of MAX modifier stack for huge V-Ray proxy objects.

                        5.3 million...

I'm dealing with 5.3 million... so there are some of us who wait salivating for features like this....

                          WOOO!!!

This is great news to me, dealing with 3-5 million polys in my average render! Especially when I've got to render at 4000 to 12000 polygons across!

Any news on any new Vray stuff to allow greater sized framebuffers?
My max ever was 25,000 pixels, but I had to go to one thread, and that was SLOOOOOWWW. Luckily clients haven't asked for that many pixels....yet....

Anyway, those other features mentioned sound nice, but this is better for me, personally.

                          Either way, I love Vray...

Sounds amazing Vlado. I love doing bigger cities for ancient ruins etc and always have great problems with both viewport and render to handle what i throw at it. In fact I got so tired about it that I decided to give it a rest for a year or so and wait for hardware and software to improve. He, lookslike you are the only ones making fast progress. max6 is even slower in viewport with polygons now

you know, that statement sounds very similar to the power of renderman....

once again, i'm very much impressed by what you guys can do.
