I am getting all sorts of weird things with normal maps and i also still have issues whe i set the bump map to high value it always does a hard edge when lit from the side...on the lates vrayMartin

This needs to get fixed quite badly because in max 2017 you can no longer use standard normal bump whan renderign with vray.
You wont even be able to see the normal bump on the list of the general maps rollout Martin

Maybe someone said it, but do you put right gamma in bitmap loader, when loading normal maps, if you are using linear workflow?AMD TR 7980X, 256GB DDR5, GeForce RTX 4090 24GB, Win 10 Pro

When you are using linear workflow bitmaps get loaded at a gamme value of 2.2 usually. But for normal maps, as much as I understood it, vray expects a gamma value of 1.0. So when you are loading normal maps you might set the input gamma value to 1/2.2 manually wich equals roughly 0.4545...
Doing that, I did not see anymore problems regarding normal maps.
Still getting bad faces on regular bump mapping with high settings on vray 3.40.2 though. But that image from 3.45 nightly looks promising

I dont know if this is related but try this:
in max 2017 with vray, make a simple sphere primitive (dont change to editable poly) and hit render. After render change segments of the sphere. It makes sphere faceted and completely wrong even in viewport.
Its really weird. And I try to do this with scanline renderer and its ok, do this only with vray!AMD TR 7980X, 256GB DDR5, GeForce RTX 4090 24GB, Win 10 Pro

It kind of makes you wonder how is that even possible. Why would anyone touch sphere primitive's code

Its do this only with vray as renderer, with other not. And happened with all primitives (I try only three, but I think that).
