skin shader a la Alsurface pleaseeee

  • ok great the shaders are there.. but those lights dont want to work at all.. anyone can post me a arnold for max scene that work ??

    EDIT : Only one type of light work here, it's Skydome, all the other lights render black...

    • Hi Vlado, do we have a autobump option in Vray like in Arnold? As far as I know, no. And since the 2d displacement don't work with udim... YET ^^ it's not good haha. 3d displace suck's for character, not crisp enought and slow and memory hungry.

      And BTW, on the super slow computer I have a work, vray is MUCH faster then Arnold, at least without displacement on Alsurface ( I found that vray alsurface with displacement can get really slow ) . Would be curoius to compare it with Arnold.

      EDIT : Also, Valdo, I'm using at work the demo of Vray, because they buy back then Vray license2.4 I think ,is there a way for them to upgrade to the latest license for a cheap price?

      About the demo, I found it quite annoying to work with seriously, I think it don't make a good user experiance working with it and will not lead to much sells. What is really annoying, is the new demo is even worst then the other one, it's the Vray going all over the image, there is way too much and they are very apparent.. I can barely see my image. the most annoying thing is the fact that when it save ( even autobackup ) all you'r render setting are resetted.. imagine someone that spended 1h to try something and then max crash as usal.. you lost it all.. if you save, you lost your setting.. really really annoying.. and the last one, the size of the progressive render is soooo small... should be at least 1000 pixels.. I especially found that it's much more fun to render with the progressive then the bucket mode now , so you should put the restriction render size for the bucket mode, not for the progressive one, so peoples enjoys a better experience with the demo.

      So less visible and less logo vray , no progressive size limit and ability to save render setting... for exemple, Corona demo is a full acces.. so people can really enjoy it and it makes a different in the end, trust me.. those reset setting are really really annoying..so it makes it a frustrating experience.. I'm always stressed to loose my setting and try to rerender fast before the autoback save.. ( no choice to keep autoback on since max crash often and I don't want to loose my work.. )

      • You'll need to increase the light intensity a lot in order to see anything.

        I will answer the other stuff later tonight, except the first one - yes, we do have autobump enabled by default. You can turn it OFF if you enable the "cache normals" option in the displacement modifier.

        • thank's Vlado, yes now the lights work ... reallly weird number there..

          EDIT :: BTW IT's vray for maya 2.4 that we have, not for max, so we were wondering if they can be converted to max and 3.4 , how does it work thank you Vlado

          And BTW, I tried Arnold in max, so far I prefer Vray ^^

          • Vlado you had mentioned earlier that one way to fix the "green" error is by blending two sss2 shaders together.

            Does the VraySkinMtl use a simple weighted average linear blend to combine the 3 sss layers, or is it doing something more complex to combine them?

            Same question for the Alsurface shader: does it just to a linear blend, or is there some complex voodoo math in there like there is on the SSS2?

              • 3 variations witht the sss2 but none of them can beat the Alsurface at the bottom... If I try to get more red through the ear with the sss2, I get more greenish on the cheek.

                  • It's also 2 times faster in my tests than the refractive mode while being more realistic! also I don't know why I got "glow in the dark" eyes with sss2 refractive mode (the eyes are a separated geo and I applied the same shader to them). But anyway it's not important anymore cause I think I will only use the Alsurface from now on.

                        • I notice a recurring problem at least with one scene. Sometimes V-Ray will get stuck indefinitely on the last bucket. I'm rendering a turntable just to see how it goes when animated. And many of my servers are now stuck on a frame since 8 hours (should take 3 to 40 minutes)

                          • I restarted those frames and they still get stuck on the last bucket.... and when it's stuck I can't cancel, i have to kill max.

                            • Same problem here and it really piss me off! :S I'm using the progressive, and when I cancel it, it get stuck! In the same scene, I have old man head, lee perry head and the girl I'm working on, all the other head render fine and faster then the girl ( I always isolate just one of them to render one of the at a time ) and when I render with the girl, it does that! I'm trying in bucket now.. it's rendering but it's VERY SLOW... any idea on what's going Vlado? And it's not the first time I have it in Vray, before most of the time it was because I did not allocated enought ram in vray, but this time I put 24 gig it's more then enought so it's not the problem. Also, I'm rendering with the 3d displacement, wich is much worst then the 2d.. but for now I have to do with this since the 2d don't support UDIM .. .

                              EDIT : Same thing in bucket mode, it's stuck on 3 buckets near the eyes... and if I cancel, it's like it trys to continu to render.. I have to kill max in the task manager and restart it... really..really annoying bug!

                              • Bigguns, I found a workaroud: just disable embree. I could render all my stuck frame for my turntable by disabling embree.
