        • Well sorry to burst all your bubbles.. well .. kinda but ATM all 8800GTX's are identical they are all based off the Nvidia reference boards. Apart from stickers and perhaps changed coolers there is no different.
The MAIN problem is drivers!!! They suck for the most part.

For those of you having problems (Morbid) please do the following to rule out any driver problems.

          1. Download & Install DriverCleanerPro from here (the proper website is charging money now ) http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/U...essional.shtml
          2. Uninstall the Nvidia drivers via the control panel
          3. Reboot into SAFE MODE
          4. Run driver cleaner, select Nvidia from the list and click Clean.
          5. Reboot back into normal windows
          6. Install latest nvidia drivers 97.92 released today.
          7. Reboot as requested.

That should fix any funny problems.

          Good luck

Any problems let me know.. i have been thru them all.

If you getting a beep during 3d mode then sounds like your powersupply isnt powerfull enough.

          • thanks daForce, I will do that tonight. I got 700w psu so it should be ok in that respect. Plus I took my dual monitors to work, so I only have 1 now, and it seems to be running better. But I will still do it
but damn that thing is fast...

            • Hehehe cool
Well let me know if you have any problems.. the one problem I always have is unless I install the nvidia drivers using a modified INF, I dont get a nvidia control panel.. its empty.
So if you get that let me know.

The power comment I made was more for syclone1 as he had the beeping problems.

Yes it is quite the speed demon thats for sure hehe

              • yea it isn't so much a beeping but a buzzing and when I bought the card I also bought an OCZ 850w PSU which should be enough to drive it, and it does run flawlessly in rainbow six vegas, NFS carbon and guildwars with no locking or the like and all settings cranked and running at 1900x1200 or the largest they will go for rez and looks great accept for that FN buzzing... it sounds almost like an electrical short kinda like a spark plug firing. Another friend of mine has his box back at the store and they have put in asus, bfg, evga cards as well as changed PSU's Mobo's ect and still having the same issues but oddly enough only under 3D load, and NO its not the fan on the card as they kept trying to convince me today, as I stopped it for a moment with my finger and was silent and still holding it I fired up guildwars and low and behold its buzzing :/

the last few weeks have been a disaster and Im in the mindset atm that Ive tried different drivers, pulled everything and just ran a single HD and the video card thinking it could be a power draw issue and still get the same results so its back in the box and going back as theres no way Im paying $763.15 for a card that buzzes like that and its by far the loudest component in the case

                • How are you finding the 8800GTX cards for MAX? We are toying with these, FireGL7200 or Quadro4500 (all probably as dual cards as we want to run two monitors)
                  Kind Regards,

                  • Hi guys...

I have serious problems with my 8800GTS workstation (still not sure why we didn't buy the GTX, but that aside) - getting blue screens and freezes when using max on dual monitor setup. Sometimes textures in max swaps for tine red and green x & y's.

Driver 97.92 (use the driver cleaner when before upgrade)
                    DirectX diagnostics OK
                    nTune stability test OK
                    Hardware:
                    ASUS P5B-E, Core2 E6600, 550W PSU, 4Gb DDR2 RAM, 400Gb SATA HD
                    Software:
                    XP32bit, Max9 & Max8

                    Single monitor also crashes.

Doing all the usual tests of memory, upgrading motherboard etc. anything I haven't thought about?

                    • Weird, I use max on single screen without problems. And abit on dual screen also no problems.
Is there anything you can do to make it crash without fail. Or is it random?

Tell me.. is your nvidia control panel populated? if its empty (which is a problem I originally had) that can cause problems as well.

                      • Control panel is fine... and I can make it crash - just load a model and move about in the viewport for 10-15 secs - BAM - freeze and eventually restart.

                        • Hmmm that easily hey.

Ok, have a look in the event view and check if there is anything listed there about the crashes.

Also in the system properties, (control panel ,system) on the advanced tab go to startup and recovery then click settings, and make sure automatically restart is unticked.
Now if you get any BSOD you should be able to read what is causing the error.

Couple other things, make sure you have all the power plugs on your motherboard plugged in. The other day I pulled my mobo out to replace the nforce4 chipset heatsink, and when putting everything back in I forgot to plug in the 4pin molex plug on the motherboard. So when I went into any game the computer would turn of basically within about 30seconds due to power drain.
Also make sure all the power plugs are plugged in on the video card too.

How many watts is your PSU, and do you know how many AMPS are suppled in each of the 12V rails.

Also are you using directx or opengl in max?

                          • Hmmm. No issues here on my eVGA - I've had the latest drivers. Also running dual monitor. Random crashes could be related to power consumption.

                            • After a long day of testing and crashing I have reached the conclusion that my PSU must either be too weak (550W) or more likely - buggered.

In fact the PSU does make a weird noise and the Asus Probe measures the fan speed to 0 RPM - cannot be healthy.

Will order a new PSU tomorrow - meanwhile back on my 3yr old workstation again.

Thanks for your suggestions DaElf was valuable help.

                              • Hopefully I should be fine with the 750w we are about to get and the 8800gtx....My question.....Can this card run more than Dual Monitors...I would love to just SETUP three one day and check it out......we always keep at least 2-4 flat 19" in the IT room.....For emergencies only of course
