          Sorry for digging out this old thread but I'm still getting sharp shadows on subdivided objects when I use bump maps. Any way to avoid this? It looks a bit ugly and I really can't not use bump otherwise the grass looks too "flat". Please check the images below:

                  I don't know if this is the same problem I've had in the past or not -- but try putting a Turn to Poly modifier on the object and see if it still creates the sharp shadows....
